Since the Vancouver Canucks decided to start Cory Schneider for game six (which Chicago still won) does that mean the Avs can trade for Luongo now?
Seriously, the Avs got the cap space and aren't in a position to bench Peter Budaj so Luongo is pretty safe.
We have two first round picks though I'd like to keep them to get a power-forward, a scoring winger or a giant defensemen the Avs need a goalie more than anything.
Yeah trading an awesome goalie within your division probably not going to happen, but the Canucks were stupid enough to bench him in the first place.

Counter-views on Carmelo Anthony
I have never been a big fan of Carmelo Anthony or the NBA within the last ten years for many similar reasons. I will confess that many of these are not entirely rational. The problems with the NBA (and personified by Melo) in my view are rather numerous:
I used to watch NBA game religiously from when I was as old as I can remember to a few years ago. Now, I much rather watch college basketball because the games are more interesting and competitive. I find myself frequently bored with the NBA, while I have never watched a college game that I found boring.
I watch the occasional Nuggets game because I find Chauncey Billups and Chris Anderson interesting players who play fundamentally sound, unselfish basketball. I also find them interesting personalities and Billups is a Denver native.
Unfortunately, these arguments are rather "fan based" and not entirely rational. I'm sure people more knowledgable about basketball have great counter-arguments. Charley Rosen writes in my opinion the best sports columns and one of the reasons why I even watch basketball.
Needless to say, Fivethirtyeight, which I reference a lot in my political blog , wrote an interesting piece on Carmelo Anthony that is well worth the read. In the end, I might like Melo or the NBA in general but basketball is still a great sport.
- Too much emphasis on star players
- Not enough passing or defense
- Fouls being called to frequently
- Lack of consistency in player line-ups
- Lack of competitive balance

NFL in London
Since the Broncos are in London and league expansion is always one of my favorite subjects, it is time for me to comment on why the NFL plays in London.
I am not necessarily against the idea of play a game in London, but I much rather the NFL play games in Canada, Las Vegas, or Mexico than in the UK. It is more feasible for the NFL to actually expand into Canada or Mexico than into the UK. Travel cost is a concern plus Canadians already have a better understanding of American football. Additionally, the US has a rapidly growing Mexican/Latino population. I'm actually very surprised how few Latino football players are in the NFL.
Secondly, what about Vegas or Los Angeles? There still isn't a football team in America's second largest media market. Let's send the financially struggling Jaguars to LA and have the Pro Bowl in Sin City.
I'm not against the NFL playing in London or Europe but let's send them the preseason and focus are efforts in the right hemisphere. The NFL is lagging at home will its pushing for expansion aboard.
And don't even get me started on a possible lock out or the fact that the Broncos are just plain terrible.

Looking forward to hockey season!
I'm back! Sorry but this off-season for hockey has been boring and I really shouldn't be talking too much about baseball since its a conflict of interest.
But, with hockey season just around the corner, its time to get back into the swing of things.
First, I have my fantasy hockey draft this Sunday where I will look to defend my hard earned title from last season. I will be writing a lot about my fantasy team just to give ya'll an interesting topic to continuously update.
As always, I will be following the Avs very closely and to a lesser extent the NHL as a whole.
Other than that, here's a few predictions for next season:
Avs will finish eighth will be eliminated in six by Chicago.

Interesting News that Could Effect the Next NFL CBA
The Green Bay Packers put out a financial report that give owners some evidence to support their case for a new collective bargaining agreement.
The problem with sports teams in building evidence for financial restructuring is they don't make their financial reports public. That is their right as privately held business, but since they deal with the public (and the public pays for their stadiums) it is in there interest to make these reports public.
It would go a long way to ending a CBA war that could cause a giant game of chicken, known as the lockout. However, the NHL shows a owners inevitable victor will be rather Pyrrhic.
Luckily, since the Packers are a rare public sports team the owners have an argument to make.

Random ramblings on Hockey, Baseball, NBA, and soccer
World Cup was awesome France found Karma. Spain deservedly won. Uruguay and Germany made things interesting. Only bad side horrible calls against the US.
I still don't understand why the Avs aren't interested in Kovie. I mean we really really need a guy that can score on left wing. Also what is taking Ilya so damn long. Lebron made up his mind faster.
Rockies are doing awesome! 9 runs in the bottom of the 9th. That was fun. (I'm a Rockies employee so that's all I'm going to say).
Mariner's pulled off a great trade with the Rangers for Cliff Lee. Probably wouldn't be in this situation if they signed Torrealba and Bay while passing on Griffey and Bradley but life isn't perfect. My only concern is Lee was traded in the division and he might actually stay there. That would be terrible.
Screw the NBA. Basketball is a great sport ruined by bad personalities, selfishness, stupidity and anti-competitiveness. Watch out NFL. Learn the lessens from the NBA and to a lesser extent the NHL when the collective bargaining agreement comes up.

Jeff Carter? Kovie?
In my opinion the Avs had three big problems last year:
1) Lack of a consistent point-a-game type of player
2) Giving up too many shots
3) Overworking Anderson
Avs have a lot of work heading into this season. Obviously the Avs already have Anderson and Budaj so the only real solution to B is just play Budaj more often.
Not too much the Avs can do about 2. Maybe sign a defenseman but the Avs already have six guys and a ton of prospects on D.
So the best way to go is grab one or two guys who can score a lot. My answer would be Jeff Carter and Kovie. The Avs have the cap room. Philly is desperate to get rid of cap space. Kovie will score a point-plus per game. If the Avs want to be cheaper than go for Sharp. Chicago needs cap space but not so much after ripping off the Thrashers.

It seems to me there is only one whole in the Avs roster and that is a second line winger. You could also say there is a need for a hard shooting point man on the powerplay but I like Quincey and think he can take on that role.
Its hard for me to say this personally because I was a huge fan of both players but Liles and Svatos possibly Salei have to go. Even if they go for picks it would be a good idea. The Avs backend is just too crowded to justify having 8 defensemen. I think it would be a good idea for the Avs to go after either Teemu Selänne or Ray Whitney at the deadline. The Avs need a good 2nd line forward (preferably left wing but if the right player comes up I'm sure the Avs should just take it aka Selänne.

Goalie Gluttons
One particularly interesting thing I've noticed in the NHL recently that nobody is talking about is why some teams need a goalie desperately (Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, and Tampa) and why there are so many teams with too many goalies (Islanders, Montreal, and Boston).
It seems to me a potential trades should be in the mix. However there are two big problems.
1) Most teams with too much goalie talent are playoff teams that like the insurance of having a backup who can step into the role of a started when injuries hit.
2) Teams that need a goalie have little hope of making the playoffs.
The big exceptions to the above rules are Ottawa and the Islanders. Islanders are not a team still in rebuilding mode and Ottawa should be rebuilding but are still in a playoff spot.
Therefore, I would expect the Islanders to ship Biron to Ottawa for some prospects or draft picks. Ottawa doesn't have a great number of developing talent but at least the Islanders are realistic. I guess the backfire of DePietro's contract is making them more conservative.
This is no guarantee it is mostly wild speculation on my part.
Though what interests me is when Montreal will trade Halak. My guess would be Tampa or Edmonton and throw in the Caps as a dark horse.

Michael Liambas Hit On Ben Fanelli
This is a totally brutal hit:
Players should be kicked out of hockey for that. There was no play there. Rangers are up 2-0. Liambas starts his stride out side the face-off circle and plows him into the glass. Both a charging and boarding penalties. This is not as bad as what Marty McSorely did to Donald Brashear or what Todd Bertuzzi did to Steve Moore (the biggest injustice in hockey history in my opinion).
Still with a rash of head hunting in hockey recently maybe its time for the NHL to come closer to the NCAA (can't believe I'm saying the NCAA does a good thing but that's another story). Anyway its time the Chris Simons of the world get a reality check.

Feature on Dani Furlong
This is my feature that was published in The Metropolitan:
When one envisions hockey many stereotypes come to mind of Canadian boys beating on each other over frozen water. However, when one meets Metro hockey's one female on-ice representative, forward Dani Furlong, many stereotypes are broken. Coming from Tampa Bay, Florida where her father worked for the Lightning of the NHL Dani grew up playing hockey with her two brothers starting at age five. Her last experience with coed hockey was when she was 14. From then on Furlong has played exclusively on women's teams.
"(Men's hockey) is a little faster and more physical," Furlong said.
Though standing at 5'3'' Furlong is not afraid of the physical play to the surprise of some of her teammates. She plays primarily forechecker on the checking line.
Furlong plans applying her experience with Metro to play division one women's hockey at Northwestern University. She was originally recruited for Northeastern* out of high school. In high school her hockey resume includes playing for a boarding school in Massachusetts and winning a national championship in 2003. After deciding nursing school wasn't for her she moved out to Colorado to pursue a career in sports journalism. She is currently works with the Met report.
"I did not know one person out here," Furlong said.
However, quickly made friends with her teammates and is treated as one of the guys.
"She's the best girl on the team!" Forward Dan Golden joke during an interview.
At first she said some of the guys were a bit more careful around when playing with her but that quickly went away by the second day of tryouts. During games the players on the other team don't really treat her much differently.
Though a female hockey player from Florida might be a surprise, the most impressive thing about Furlong is her style of play and not her biography. She is widely considered to be one of the smartest hockey players on the team.
"We have a had five girls tryout out for the team before but in those cases it was clear that none of them would be able to make it," said head coach Ryan Callahan. "She's smart and plays the game very well."
Though the team was originally mum on whether or not Furlong would making the final roster assistant coach Curtis Duffus knew she would make the final roster.
"I am personally very impressed and surprised," said Duffus. "She handily made the team."
After making the final roster Furlong has not been a disappointment. The checking forward has two assists and three games.

Avs/Wings game thoughts
Good win for the Avs though I have a lot of concerns about the defense and the refereeing in this game.
Why can the Avs not clear the puck out of the zone? If Budaj was playing this game would be over. Craig Anderson bailed out the Avs on this one. Anderson is the top goalie in the league right now. How long Anderson can keep this going is going to be a question mark. However, goalies do tend to be late bloomers so there's a good chance the Avs got a steal in signing him.
Still I don't care how good Anderson is no goalie should be counted on to make 48 saves a night. The Avs need to get more shots. Anderson has already played 11 games in a row. He's going to break down if the Avs can't clear the zone and get some offensive pressure.
Probably the most surprising thing about this game personally was Paul Statsny's eight penalty minutes. Not sure that last tripping penalty was a dive or not but that might have been a questionable call. At least Statsny sealed the deal with the empty net coming out of the box.

With the Patriots Bucs game in London coming this Sunday there has been a lot of talk about an expansion team in London. I have to admit that I'm a little shocked there is so much talk about a London based team since well London is pretty damn far.
Though the NFL would be the only American pro-sports league that is theoretically capable of playing games regularly in London since they only play once a week.
Additionally, I rather see teams in LA, Vegas, Mexico City or Toronto before London. If the NFL wants to expand into a foreign market I'd say expand into Mexico or Canada first. If the NFL really wanted to expand in Europe then why did it end NFL Europe? (Answer: it was loosing $30 million per season).
I would like to put some more research into the issue but just off the top of my head here's a better idea for an international expansion of the NFL:
1) Expand or relocated teams to LA, Vegas, Mexico City and Toronto.
2) Bring back NFL Europe as a minor/developemental league similar to baseball or hockey.
3) Shorten preseason and have preseason played exclusively outside the US. Possibly against NFL Europe teams.
4) Expanded the regular season to 18 games. Each team plays twice internationally. Most games will be held in the UK or Germany though a game in China, Tokyo, or Australia would be interesting.
Again just purely an idea. Not sure how many readers I have but I would love comments.

So The Hockey News has a report that the KHL is planning on expanding the rest of Europe.
I actually think this would be very exciting. Yes, it would be nice to have all the best players in one league still as an economics, sports, international relations nerd this would be a lot of fun.

I'm back
Ok every now and then I get a little flaky. I admit it but now that I'm back into sports writing for my college paper you'll see a lot more of me. Also, hockey season is starting. I got a really terrible fantasy team so I'll be talking a lot about that. All my goalies are from Florida and Tennessee that's all I have to say about that.
By the way, is there anyone else out there who is shocked to see the Broncos 5-0 and the Avs are 4-1-1? I sure am.
Anyway, Metro hockey's home opener is this Friday so I'll post a rough draft of that story. Some exciting stuff this year. A girl made it to the final roster. She is very good and is quite deserving. Feature on her will be posted soon. Plus, later this year there will be a game at Pepsi Center which should be quite exciting. By the way, is there anyone else out there who is shocked to see the Broncos 5-0 and the Avs are 4-1-1? I sure am.
Anyway, Metro hockey's home opener is this Friday so I'll post a rough draft of that story. Some exciting stuff this year. A girl made it to the final roster. She is very good and is quite deserving. Feature on her will be posted soon. Plus, later this year there will be a game at Pepsi Center which should be quite exciting. Orton has a lot of work a head of him
I'm not one to jump on a bandwagon but I am concerned about how well Denver QB Kyle Orton will do this season. Broncos fans should be patient. Rebuilding will take time and the Denver defense isn't that great. However, outside of QB the Broncos offense should be pretty solid. Simms did such a great job in the second half that he is definitely making a case to be the starting QB. You have to like the guy though considering how much he has supported Orton. Plus you got to like a guy who is tough enough to play with a ruptured spleen and could have died. We'll see where McDaniels goes.

Dater on Lappy
Looks like Lappy won't be with the Avs next season. Dater has some pretty negative things to say about that. I totally agree.
How can the Avs justify signing Darcy Tucker for 2 years at $4.5 million than offer less than $1.15 to Lappy?
Makes no sense at all. This season is going to be a rough one with the Avs hopefully if we can get a goalie and make no more stupid signings we can get two years in a row of top 3 picks and let some bad contracts expire.
Until for now 09-10 looks lost (barring a miracle trade of the AI for Billups variety) but there is potential for a good 10-11 season.
